Beroemde oorlogsfotografe Anja Niedringhaus in Afghanistan doodgeschoten

Anja Niedringhaus by Associated PressIn het oosten van Afghanistan heeft een onbekende man in politie-uniform 2 buitenlandse journalistes van het Amerikaanse persbureau AP neergeschoten.

Volgens de lokale politie overleefde de Duitse oorlogsfotografe Anja Niedringhaus de schietpartij niet. De Canadese journaliste Kathy Gannon raakte zwaargewond………

De schietpartij had gisteren plaats in de provincie Khost een dag voor de presidents- en regionale verkiezingen van vandaag. De Taliban hebben gezworen de stembusgang in de war te schoppen.

De uit Westfalen afkomstige Niedringhaus (48) verwierf bekendheid met haar foto’s van de val van de Berlijnse Muur in 1989. Daarna fotografeerde zij tijdens de burgeroorlog in het uiteenvallende Joegoslavië.

Ook coverde zij de conflicten in het Midden-Oosten, Libië, Afghanistan en Pakistan. In 2005 kreeg zij de Pulitzerprijs voor haar foto’s van gevechten in Irak.

Belangenorganisatie Journalisten zonder Grenzen waarschuwde afgelopen woensdag nieuwsorganisaties al hun journalisten beter te beveiligen. Vooral de mensen die verslag doen bij stembureaus in kleine provincieplaatsen, zijn kwetsbaar.

Vandaag werd bekend dat de fatale schietpartij op de journalistes een wraakactie was voor een NAVO-actie in dat land. Dat heeft een politiewoordvoerder in de Afghaanse provincie Khost gezegd.

De twee journalistes waren in Afghanistan om de presidentsverkiezingen van zaterdag te verslaan.
